Spiritually speaking we now have to look at the essence of working with spirit, what is the purpose that spirit want to achieve? Well each individual will have an assigned task to undertake. This is thought out before the individual spirit comes to the earth plain, before birth. So each spirit then chooses the parents, society and culture, which will give the best environment for that purpose to be achieved.
This purpose is to develop the spirit, not the brain. The spirit is trying to learn how to control all emotions, desires, physical attractions. You notice the word is control, not suppress. The religious leaders for centuries have encouraged, threatened, punished their flock into suppressing the desires and emotions. Spirit is encouraging us to learn how to control these feelings and desires. Control means using these feelings and desires when they need to be used from a position of controlled thought for the good of all mankind. To suppress such feelings causes them to burst out in other ways such as disease.
